Education Policy and Environmental Literacy

March 16, 2016 @ 9:00 am - 2:30 pm

Free – $25

The education policy landscape is changing, and there are new opportunities on the horizon for expanding environmental education in schools.  On December 10th, 2015, President Obama signed into law the Elementary and Secondary Education Act, which includes language on the importance of environmental literacy. In 2013 California enacted the new Local Control Funding Formula, a landmark law that changes the way our schools are funded and requires that each school district develop a Local Control Accountability Plan (LCAP) to identify its priority goals and student outcomes.

At the March convening, we’ll unpack these policy changes and their implications for the field of environmental education. We’ll strategize with friends and colleagues about how we can best ensure that environmental literacy is top of mind for school administrators, educators, and parents as they create their Local Control Accountability Plans and allocate funding.

Dr. Rena Dorph from Lawrence Hall of Science will be joining us to share the LCAP Toolkit, which was created by Lawrence Hall of Science and CSLNet to help parents, students, educators, community partners and business leaders who are concerned about improving Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) and environmental education to participate in their local school district budget development process.

This event will from from 10 am to 2pm, followed by a networking reception.
Morning snacks, lunch, and refreshments will be served.
